Introducing our recently appointed Program Facilitator, Kalijah Lovett!

My name is Kalijah Lovett, I am a proud Gunditjmara man, and I was raised up on Boandik country of South Australia where I lived for 16 years as ward of the state for 14 of those years, before coming back to country.

I spent my whole life in the system until 2022, which has, in turn, made me very passionate about helping young mob break the invisible cuffs that puts you in. I am also passionate in helping young mob create strength to have a voice, and change. I am very excited to be a part of the deadly team here at KYC, to learn and grow in the space.

I come from a construction background, and I loved being on tools. But after 9 years it started affecting my mind as I didn’t like the fact I was becoming a part of the problem; by destroying the land rather than nurturing it.

In 2023, I decided I wanted to live a life dedicated to peace and purpose. I strongly feel like I went through what I went through so I could gain the knowledge and appropriate tools to go back and help those in similar, or same, circumstances.

Alongside my role as a cultural Program Facilitator here at KYC, I am also a mentor for 16 Yards. I walk with young mob through their journey during incarceration and post release, helping them to connect with culture but also to enjoy life outside of the environment they are accustomed to; planting seeds is my hobby.

I grew up on rural country towns and bush ways, so, in my spare time, I love to get away from the city and away from technology. I love going for weekend long hikes, connecting with the mother land, and myself spiritually, I enjoying playing recreational sports such as volleyball, and I am into hunting for food.
