NEWS: Victorian Government announces support for Aboriginal children and young people

Koorie Youth Council

24 March 2021

We acknowledge the Victorian Government’s announcement with the investment of nearly $12 million in culturally specific services and programs to support Aboriginal children and young people.
We’re very glad to see support for the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service (VALS) to re-launch Balit Ngulu, a dedicated legal service for Aboriginal children and young people. Funding has also been announced for many community based services across the state, along with legal services, intervention programs, and initiatives to help steer Aboriginal young women away from the justice system and connect them with school, health and cultural supports.
We’re proud to announce this funding also includes investment for KYC to lead an Aboriginal youth voice initiative to ensure Aboriginal children and young people have a voice in youth justice. This initiative will be a continuation of the Ngaga-dji project and all it stands for, with many of the commitments in this funding announcement also strongly aligning with its recommendations.
We commend the Government for funding these crucial services and look forward to working with the community and young people to progress this important work. Bringing action to Aboriginal young people’s voices is at the centre of the work we do at KYC, and this investment ensures we can continue to forge meaningful change for our young mob.
