2019 Koorie Youth Summit
2019 Koorie Youth Summit
Koorie Youth Council
Thank you to all the deadly young people, speakers, Elders and community for attending our sixth annual Koorie Youth Summit!
For the first time, we hosted our Summit outside Melbourne’s CBD. Over one hundred delegates travelled from across the state for the 3 day and 3 night event on the lands of the Wurundjeri and the Wathaurong/Wadda-Wurrung people in Glenmore. The Summit is one of the largest gatherings created for and by Victorian Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people aged 18-28 years. The gathering is an opportunity to connect with each other, discuss what is important to us, be proud, learn, share and celebrate our culture.
This year’s the theme, ‘Past, Present, Future,’ recognises our history as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as preparation for our future. The theme tied into important topics such as Treaty, which was the first panel of the Summit. This was one of the first formal settings for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to learn about Treaty and how it will influence and affect our futures.
The Summit also included panels featuring inspiring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people and their vision for the future. The program included cultural stories from Elders, a documentary screening and yarning circles around the topics of connecting to country, climate justice and young voices. The Summit closed with a Sunday music festival curated by Still Here, a First Nations owned and operated company.
